The Pins and Patches were made to celebrate NASA's 60th Anniversary, an incredible milestone in spaceflight and an even more incredible history. The design shows the NASA logo and the below graphic being held in place by a ''6'', thus representing the 60th Anniversary. The below graphic shows a Command Module having been launched into space from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the historic launch site. Above the Earth sits a half-moon, the other half being made up of 12 stars, thus representing the 12 men who walked on it's surface. Finally, beside the Cape are 3 stars, a tribute to the Apollo 1 crew. The design is finished with ''60 Years in Space'' written along the bottom. In all we wanted a design which encapsulated the struggles, achievements and memory of all which NASA has achieved in its 60 years.
As per the Space Qualification Process, prior to flight these NASA 60th Anniversary Pins and Patches will be integrated into one of the MISSE Sample Carrier clean room facilities in Houston, Texas near NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Once integrated the MSC’s containing the pins & patches are vibration, thermal and vacuum tested for flight verification and when testing is complete, they will be shipped to Cape Canaveral, Florida. After arriving at the Cape the payload is then loaded onto a SpaceX Dragon Capsule which is scheduled for launch in November/December 2017 aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 CRS-13 Flight, destined for the International Space Station. Once launched into space, the Dragon Capsule will orbit the Earth for 2-3 days until the rendezvous with the Space Station. Once docked the MSC’s will be removed from the SpaceX Dragon Capsule by the Astronauts on board the station, after which the MSC's will be sent outside of the airlock and transferred to the MISSE-Flight Facility using the ISS robotic arm, where one batch will remain in a 6 month flight in orbit around the Earth, and a second batch will remain in a 12 month orbit around the Earth. During it’s flight aboard the Space Station the pins and patches will be subjected to the most hostile environment imaginable… Space.
While in space the pins and patches will be subject to:
Temperatures of -100 °C (-148 °F) up to 120 °C (248 °F)
Electromagnetic Radiation (UV-A, UV-B, UV-C, Visible Light, IR)
Vacuum of Space
After travelling over 75 million miles and 150 million miles respectively during its flight aboard the ISS (4.8 miles per second x 6 months / 4.8 miles per second x 12 months) the pins and patches will return to Earth via SpaceX Dragon Capsule, where it will then be delivered to you as a unique collectable and a piece of space history.
Each Pin & Patch will come with Photographs and Certification Documentation.
