DESCRIPTION
This artifact presentation contains a genuine piece o heatshield from the Gemini 2 spacecraft. The ablative substance of the Gemini heatshield was a paste-like silicone elastomer material that hardened after being poured into a honeycomb form. The heatshield was designed to protect the fragile spacecraft from the enormous heat of reentry into the atmosphere. Reentry began at a velocity of more than 27,500 kilometers (17,000 miles) per hour.
