DESCRIPTION
This artifact presentation contains a genuine piece of Apollo 10 flown Command Module "Charlie Brown" kapton foil. Kapton foil coated the exterior of the spacecraft in order to protect the crew and electronic systems from the solar radiation experienced in deep space. The coated kapton foil was applied in 12 layers and was gold on one side and silver on the other. During reentry into Earth's atmosphere, much of this foil was burned away with the remains being stripped during post-flight operations and restoration.

Authentication Information:
The space flown material within this presentation came from the collection of North American Aviation (Rockwell International) Space Division employee Jerald B. Wilken, who recovered it during post-flight operations. Jerry Wilken worked as an Associate Test Engineer in 1962 and went on to be a Test Conductor for Apollo post-flight operations from 1967 through to 1969.
